What to do when visiting Pona?
Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Kakheti, Georgia, lies our humble village of Pona. While larger cities often steal the spotlight, it's the lesser-known places offer a uniquely realistic perspective into rural, rustic, countryside living.
If you are the type of traveler who prefers an off the beaten path, and is not afraid to get gritty, or of roaming animals in the streets, or immersing yourself in a farm town struggling with severe poverty—then Pona serves as a unique experience to see the Georgian / Ossetian / Azerbaijani cultures for yourself.
Sunday Market, Baisubani 🐔
The local market is a whole experience in itself… Villagers gather around small fires, selling turkeys, rabbits, hens, car engines, sickles, herbs, candies, walnuts, meat, honey, socks, soap, rice, etc. We drive there weekly for our produce from friendly local farmers, and recommend going as early as possible for the peak experience.
Hiking in Lagodekhi National Park ⛰️
Our village is a great starting point for excursions to nearby natural attractions, such as the Alazani River, or the scenic landscapes of the Lagodekhi National Park (where you can also rent horses to ride, if hiking is not your thing).
Wineries + Traditional Supra🍷
Kakheti is renowned for its vineyards and winemaking traditions, for it is the birth place of wine! Near to our village are a few good local wineries, where you get a chance to savor the region's exquisite wines, while soaking in breathtaking views of the Caucasus Mountains. Wineyard 1 in Akhasapeli is a great one, owned by our local friend Tika 🍇
Visit Chateau Chapiteau ⛺️
Also in Pona, there is a glamping village merely a 10 minute walk away from BH. Founded in 2019, Chateau Chapiteau has grown into a year round community of Workawayers, guests and team members residing in the forest. This magical place is where Alex and Timur first met.
They have a lagoon to swim in, meals to dine with, a Banya (traditional Russian style sauna), movie nights, etc. Check out their instagram here.
Pona is a village to experience authentic Caucasian culture, while expanding your perception of farmers, wine makers, or expats just like us. There are mountains to hike, old bunkers to explore, lagoons to swim in, families who will welcome you into their home with delicious cooking, cows to milk, etc. If that is your type of rugged traveling, contact us today to crash at BH :) We will welcome you with a warm meal, glass of wine, and friendly smiles.
